The Black Children of Ulster by
Annie Yellowe Palma
Many will not be aware there are black people living in N. Ireland and my family would have been the first encounter for most in the 60s.
This book is about life in Ulster told through the eyes of a little black girl, exposed to the daily struggles associated with racism, sectarianism, civil war and poverty.
Annie Yellowe Palma, was born in Liverpool, the only girl and middle child of six. Her father was Nigerian and her mother Irish. Her parents separated when she was about 4 years old and she never saw her father again. He died in 1968. Her mother died in 2008.
The story begins in the 60s at the height of the troubles where family life revolved around poverty and violence. The family came from a staunch Protestant background and grew up in an Irish slum in Portadown, Co Armagh, infamously known as ‘the murder triangle’ because of the high numbers of killings there at the time, carried out by paramilitary organisations. In the book the author refers to the members of such organisations (UDA and UVF) as ‘the Mafia.’
The author takes you on a candid tour of the neighbourhood. You will feel as though you have met many of the characters personally and find out what daily life was like behind the barricades and the closed curtains.
Despite the dysfunction around and within the family home, the children were very resourceful with great imaginations. The author describes finding fun and laughter in many situations and the book reflects many moments of utter hilarity even in the most serious of situations. The story will make you laugh and cry, and sometimes in the same breath.
The author states, ‘We had a strange existence in that we were accepted in our community as, ‘one of us’ and racially abused daily by our family, neighbours, the Mafia, the Police and the British Army.’
The abuse was mostly verbal, occasionally spilling into acts of violence. The author’s brothers literally had to fight to earn respect and they learned to hold their own. The Mafia and family friends could be fiercely protective and would come to their defence when others tried to insult or hurt them.
For the Love of a Mother:
Eenie meenie minee mo
catch a nigger by the toe
when he squeals let him go
eenie meenie minee mo.
Everyone laughed and pointed at us. My brothers stood there looking lost, dirty and sad. Yes, everything was normal. I hated the person who wrote that song, it hurt. How could anyone get away with making up a song that hurt the feelings of little black children? We are humans too, we feel things, we do cry too when we hurt. Years later I learned the actual words of the song were, catch a ‘piggy’ by the toe...... bastards.
